Status update

I’m about two weeks in and this is where I’m up to. I don’t really know whether 80,000 words is a right figure to aim at for the first draft, and with my plan to reduce by 10% for the second draft, that will bring it down to 72,000 words, but it’s a target for now.

When I take part in NaNoWriMo, I write 1,667 words a day for 30 days, and that’s the only way I can get to 50,000 words in the time allowed, but it’s too high a daily target for this project. I need to be realistic about this and with a full time job, and two children under 7, realism is very much at the front of my planning.

But, I think 500 words a day is a good target. I know from experience that if I have some vague idea of what’s happening in the scene I’m immersed in, I can write 500 words in 25 minutes. And as habit forming goes, I’d sooner keep to a 500 word a day habit successfully over a long period, than have a higher target that I’ll end up missing more regularly. But, even at this relatively low target, I could achieve a first draft in 160 days. That could mean two novels a year!
